Jints take 3 of 4 from LA

GAME 1
Candlestick Park
Koufax vs Marichal
SFG 5, LAD 4 (10 inn)

Koufax faltered and blew a 2 run lead as the Jints rallied to beat the Dodgers in extra innings.  The Say Hey Kid (3-4) and Chuck Hiller (3-5) were responsible for 2/3 of the Jints hits.  Frank Linzy picked up the win with 2 scoreless innings of relief.  Both HOF starters got roughed up a bit to open the season.

GAME 2
Drysdale vs Perry
LAD 3, SFG 2

For the second day in a row fans were treated to a pitching matchup between HOF'er.  This time both were up for the task with Big D outpacing the man who "loads em up".  Drysdale went 7 1/3 and gave up 2, while fanning 7.  Norm Larker, getting a surprise start went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's courtesy of a double and a homer.

GAME 3
Dodger Stadium
O'Dell vs Singer
SFG 9, LAD 1

The throwing machine (Bill Singer) was lit up early and often by the Bay Area Bombers.  Bobby Bonds (2-5) knocked in 5 runs.  San Fran banged out 9 runs on 12 hits with Willie Mays being the only one in the lineup not getting one.  Billy O'Dell gave up just one run while going the distance.

GAME 4
McCormick vs Osteen
SFG 10, LAD 5 (13 inn)

Don't let the 5 run bulge in the score fool you, this was a see saw battle that took 13 innings to decide.  Lost in the shuffle was Ron Perranoski's 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.  This is because his replacement Howie Reed got lit up for 5 runs in the 13th to hand the game to San Fran.  Jim Ray Hart (3-5) knocked in 4.  Stretch McCovey's 3 run shot put the game out of reach.  Cepeda's PH HR in the 8th tied the score and sent the game to OT.

Chisox and Bombers tie

The White Sox pitching shuts down the Yankees' great offense in New York, but the Yankee hitters shook off the rust on the road by belting the Sox at Comiskey. A 2-2 series tie.

Game summaries:

Game Two: White Sox 3, Yankees 2
Mel Stottlemyre can't find home plate in the first, giving up three walks and walking in a run, and giving up two more in the second on a J.C. Martin double. That was all the run support Gary Peters needed, as he shut down NY the rest of way. The Yanks mounted a rally in the ninth with Mickey Mantle's RBI narrowing the lead to one, but Hoyt Wilhelm came in to nail down the save.

Game Three: New York 12, Chicago 8
A wild game, with the Yankees finding the seats with five homers, three from Mantle. Ralph Terry is a bit rocky but gets the win, while the Chisox's Juan Pizarro hits the early showers. Two Sox are ejected after brawls instigated by throwing at batters in an ugly game.

Game Four: New York 7, Chicago 1

A's and O's Split opening series

A tightly contested series for the most part saw Baltimore take the first 3 games before the Oakland bats came roaring back in game 4.

Game 1  Baltimore 5 Oakland 0
Dave McNally opened the season with a fine 2 hitter in tossing the complete game shutout.  But he Baltimore bits weren't sizzling either as Catfish Hunter (a personal favorite of mine) scattered 5 Baltimore hits over  6 innings but game up 3 runs in the process.

Game 2 Baltimore 4 Oakland 2
Another pitching duel followed the next day as Milt Pappas spread 4 Oakland hits over 7 innings and held the A's to just 2 runs which he gave up in a rough first inning.   Across the diamond Blue Moon Odom held Baltimore to just 6 hits over 8 innings.

Game 3   Baltimore 3 Oakland 2
The series moved on to Baltimore and the low scoring continued for both teams.  orioles hang on to win a nail biter 3-2 as the A's bats begin to show life in the series getting  11 hits off 4 O's hurlers.  Jose Tartabull went 2-2 as a late entry pinch hitting for Rick Monday.

Game 4  Oakland 10 Baltimore 6
Baltimore's pitching dominance came to a halt in game 4 as the A's jump to an early 4-0 lead after 3 against Baltimore's Hoeft.  Baltimore fights its way back and by the 8th took the lead 5-4 against Chuck Dobson of the A's.  The walls came crashing down for the O's i the top of the 9th as Baltimore's pen of Dick Hall, Moe Drabowsky and Stu Miller implode and the A's put up 6 on 3 singles, a triple, a home run, a walk and a hit batsman against the O's staff to take the series finale 10-6. Paul Lindblad came on in the 9th for the A's to close this one out and send the A's home with their first win of the season.  Of Oakland's 11 hits, Jerry Lumpe was the only player to have more than 1.

Fun, well played series.  This look like it's gonna be a tight KOD all around to me!

Take care and be safe out there.

Fwd: KOD31 - 60s Pirates vs. 60s Cardinals

Game #1, August 15
ST. LOUIS – Jim Pagliaroni's (1) 3-run bomb in the 4th highlighted a 5-run explosion for the Pirates as they went on to win 5-3. Bob Friend (1-1) went 8 strong to defeat Bob Gibson (0-1). Roy Face (1) pitched the frame for the save. The Cardinals had jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first 3 innings.

Game #2, August 16
ST. LOUIS – After a Bob Skinner (1) solo shot in the T4 gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead, Gibson gathered the Redbirds on the steps of the dugout and gave them "what for." St. Louis responded with 6 runs in the B4 and went on to an 11-2 shellacking of the Parrot heads. Leading the way was Bobby Tolan (1) who homered and took advantage of Dick Stuart at 1B with 3 bunt singles. Lou Brock also collected 3 hits, including a bunt. Curt Flood (1) and Bill White (1) each hit 2-run blasts. Steve Carlton (1-0) and Dick Hughes (2 IP) only yielded 5 hits.

Game #3, August 17
PITTSBURGH – A much closer game saw the Cardinals send 8 to the plate and score 3 in the 1st, then hold on desperately for a 4-3 winner. Flood (3H) started it all with a knock and a SB. Dick Groat singled him home. Julian Javier would later knock in Groat and Ken Boyer. Willie Stargell (1) crushed a solo HR to lead off the 2nd. The Bucs would add another in the 4th. The visitors would get what proved to be the GWRBI in the 7th when Brock doubled in Boyer. The dramatic B9 began with Don Dennis on the hill for St. Louis. Gene Alley and Bill Mazeroski (3H) opened with safeties. PH Milt May's ground out moved them to 2nd and 3rd. Bobby Shantz (1) replaced Dennis. Manny Mota singled up the middle plating Alley with Maz stopping at third. Don Hoak whiffed for out 2. Roberto Clemente was then intentionally passed to load them up for "Pops." On a 1-2 count, the knuckler danced and left Willie mesmerized as he watch it for strike 3. Alas, there was no joy in Steeltown. Both SPs were the pitchers of record. Nelson Briles (1-0) and Bob Veale (0-1).

Game #4, August 18
PITTSBURGH – Bob Moose (1-0) and Roy Face (2) hold the Birds to just 1 run on 5 hits in a 3-1 Pirates win in the finale. The Bucs tallied all their runs in the 3rd. Pagliaroni led off with a single. Moose reached on an error with his bunt. Mota doubled in Pags, followed by Hoak's single scoring Moose with Mota stopping at 3B. Clemente grounded to SS, forcing Hoak, but plating Mota. The series ended in a 2-2 split.
