Fwd: KOD31 - 60s Pirates vs. 60s Cardinals

Game #1, August 15
ST. LOUIS – Jim Pagliaroni's (1) 3-run bomb in the 4th highlighted a 5-run explosion for the Pirates as they went on to win 5-3. Bob Friend (1-1) went 8 strong to defeat Bob Gibson (0-1). Roy Face (1) pitched the frame for the save. The Cardinals had jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first 3 innings.

Game #2, August 16
ST. LOUIS – After a Bob Skinner (1) solo shot in the T4 gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead, Gibson gathered the Redbirds on the steps of the dugout and gave them "what for." St. Louis responded with 6 runs in the B4 and went on to an 11-2 shellacking of the Parrot heads. Leading the way was Bobby Tolan (1) who homered and took advantage of Dick Stuart at 1B with 3 bunt singles. Lou Brock also collected 3 hits, including a bunt. Curt Flood (1) and Bill White (1) each hit 2-run blasts. Steve Carlton (1-0) and Dick Hughes (2 IP) only yielded 5 hits.

Game #3, August 17
PITTSBURGH – A much closer game saw the Cardinals send 8 to the plate and score 3 in the 1st, then hold on desperately for a 4-3 winner. Flood (3H) started it all with a knock and a SB. Dick Groat singled him home. Julian Javier would later knock in Groat and Ken Boyer. Willie Stargell (1) crushed a solo HR to lead off the 2nd. The Bucs would add another in the 4th. The visitors would get what proved to be the GWRBI in the 7th when Brock doubled in Boyer. The dramatic B9 began with Don Dennis on the hill for St. Louis. Gene Alley and Bill Mazeroski (3H) opened with safeties. PH Milt May's ground out moved them to 2nd and 3rd. Bobby Shantz (1) replaced Dennis. Manny Mota singled up the middle plating Alley with Maz stopping at third. Don Hoak whiffed for out 2. Roberto Clemente was then intentionally passed to load them up for "Pops." On a 1-2 count, the knuckler danced and left Willie mesmerized as he watch it for strike 3. Alas, there was no joy in Steeltown. Both SPs were the pitchers of record. Nelson Briles (1-0) and Bob Veale (0-1).

Game #4, August 18
PITTSBURGH – Bob Moose (1-0) and Roy Face (2) hold the Birds to just 1 run on 5 hits in a 3-1 Pirates win in the finale. The Bucs tallied all their runs in the 3rd. Pagliaroni led off with a single. Moose reached on an error with his bunt. Mota doubled in Pags, followed by Hoak's single scoring Moose with Mota stopping at 3B. Clemente grounded to SS, forcing Hoak, but plating Mota. The series ended in a 2-2 split.
